Why is ReFi interesting? My work in healthcare sustainability and innovation showed me that the ultimate goal is to do no harm to nature in the delivery of healthcare as a best case scenario. This fundamental limit of zero harm is not actually good enough to allow human society to grow and thrive on a healthy planet. I realised before I knew what ReFi was that we needed to evolve and redesign our economic system to make it possible for nature and human society to thrive together – to realign incentives to mutual benefit. ReFi makes this possible and is an enabler for us to build a regenerative global economic system. ReFi is a building block for a healthy, thriving human society on a healthy, thriving earth for the long-term.
My touchpoints with blockchain and ReFi so far: I became curious about what kind of structures would enable us to move beyond sustainability into regeneration, and I came across the work of Graham Boyd who helped design a new company structure called the FairShares Commons. The FairShares spoke of the importance of recognising at least 6 forms of capital to enable companies to thrive alongside nature, and Graham Boyd extended this to show that companies will need to have multi-capital financial systems alongside a multi-stakeholder legal incorporation in order to build a regenerative economy that is fit for all beings. Alongside this high level theory I developed a simpler interest in crypto and discovered the world of ReFi through crypto memes! I am now a cofounder for ColivingDAO which uses these principles to create the future of regenerative community living by revolutionising property ownership.
