Why is Bitcoin interesting? Before Bitcoin, digital transactions required banks or payment processors (e.g., Visa, PayPal) to verify and process payments. These centralized entities create single points of failure, control user funds, and can block or reverse transactions. Bitcoin replaces this with decentralized consensus, allowing users to transact without middlemen.
Bitcoin sparked a technological revolution by combining computer science, cryptography, economics, and game theory to create a decentralized, trustless financial system. It primarily solves two major problems: double spending and the reliance on trusted third parties for digital transactions. What makes Bitcoin truly fascinating is its security, upheld by cryptographic principles and a global network of miners. These miners validate transactions and secure the network by competing to solve an extremely complex mathematical puzzle—akin to finding a single grain of sand in the entire universe. At the time of writing (Block 884,763), miners are rewarded 3.125 BTC for successfully appending a new block to the longest chain, ensuring the network’s integrity and resilience.
My touchpoints with Bitcoin so far: I’ve always been fascinated by Bitcoin’s non-custodial wallet ecosystem, which gives users full control over their funds. My journey started with exploring BIP-39, BIP-42, and BIP-32, understanding how seed phrases generate private keys and Bitcoin addresses. I’ve also delved into different wallet types and address formats, from legacy (P2PKH) to SegWit (P2SH, Bech32) and Taproot Address (interesting upgrades are coming in taproot implentations). The ability to derive multiple addresses from a single seed phrase using hierarchical deterministic wallets (HD wallets) is particularly intriguing. Bitcoin’s approach to self-custody and financial sovereignty continues to inspire me.
